We have arrived. It’s official. We are overjoyed to announce that our farm has found its forever home. Here on 16 acres just north of Coburg, Oregon we are getting to work and getting to know our new land. Since October we have been moving, unpacking, making repairs to the home and barn, and preparing the soil for our 2015 vegetable planting. We are very happy to have found this gem and we look forward to the many seasons to come. The land is mostly flat with slight contours to plant diverse crops over the years. The soil is excellent quality river bottom soil that we anticipate will respond well to additions of compost and successional cover cropping to build organic matter. It has been farmed to seed crops in the recent past, and prior that, since the turn of the century the farm has been in the same family who raised vegetables, orchard crops, hops and livestock. We are fortunate to be in touch with the original family who has stewarded the farm for over 100 years. They have shared stories about the history of this land and home, including stories of the great grandfathers mastery in mechanical cultivation using the Farm All Model A. The cover crop seed we planted in November on two acres is germinating well. Here we will plant vegetables, herbs, and flowers for direct sale primarily through our CSA farm share program, but first there are lots of projects keeping us busy through the fall and winter! In December and January we are building an equipment barn and putting up our greenhouse along with the usual seasonal tasks such as ordering seeds and crop planning.
